Canadian tax, built in

GST, HST and PST on every quote — automatically

Most construction software is built for US sales tax and leaves Canadian contractors doing provincial math by hand. BuildersBridge applies the right sales tax for the job's province on every estimate, change order, and invoice — in CAD, with the provincial rules already built in.

How it works

From provincial rate to tax-ready invoice

The tax workflow follows the job: set the province once and every document downstream carries the correct sales tax.

Province-aware by default

Set the job's province and the estimate applies that jurisdiction's sales tax — 5% GST in Alberta, 13% HST in Ontario, GST + PST where both apply — with no manual rate lookups.

Itemized estimates, correct tax

Break the job down line by line into labour, material, subcontract and equipment. Markup, discount and the province's sales tax then apply to the estimate total with consistent rounding, so the quote reconciles and the client sees how the number was built.

The same tax on the invoice

Deposits, progress draws, and final invoices inherit the project's tax setup, so what you quoted is what you bill — in CAD for Canadian work, USD with state sales tax for US jobs.

A clean paper trail

Estimates, change orders, and invoices carry the tax breakdown on the document itself — what your bookkeeper and your client both need at year end.

BuildersBridge applies configured sales-tax rates to your documents; it does not provide tax, accounting, or legal advice. Confirm the tax treatment of specific items with your accountant.

Nova Scotia is 14%, not 15% — the provincial portion dropped to 9% on 1 April 2025. Quebec's QST is 9.975% applied alongside GST, which is why the combined figure is 14.975% rather than a round number.

How provincial tax applies to construction work

The rate is the easy half. Whether you charge provincial tax on work that becomes part of a building, or pay it yourself on the materials instead, differs by province — and it is the half that costs money to get wrong. Only the four provinces with a separate provincial tax are listed; HST provinces have no separate provincial tax to treat differently.

Each rule above was read from the province's own published guidance on the date shown. Quebec's is marked unverified because it has not yet been confirmed against a primary Revenu Québec source, and BuildersBridge applies QST to the full price until it is — we would rather say so than guess. None of this is tax advice; confirm your own treatment with your accountant, and tell us if you find something out of date.

FAQ

Canadian construction tax questions

Which Canadian taxes does BuildersBridge support?

GST, HST, and PST are applied by province on estimates and invoices — for example 5% GST in Alberta, 13% HST in Ontario, and GST plus PST in provinces that levy both. US state sales tax is supported for American jobs.

Do I have to look up tax rates myself?

No. Choose the job's province and the correct sales tax is applied automatically to the estimate and carried through change orders and invoices.

Does BuildersBridge give tax advice?

No. BuildersBridge is construction management software: it applies configured sales-tax rates to your documents. How specific items in your business should be treated for tax is a question for your accountant or the CRA and your provincial authority.

What about US jobs?

US projects run in USD with state sales tax applied, using the same estimating and invoicing workflow — useful for Canadian contractors working across the border.

Works with AI estimating, job costing and flat CAD pricing.
